Pirates Adjust Roster, Send Bednar to Minors

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made significant roster adjustments, optioning right-handed pitcher David Bednar to Triple-A and designating catcher Jason Delay for assignment. These moves correspond with the earlier reported promotion of pitching prospect Thomas Harrington. Bednar's demotion marks a sharp decline for the once-dominant closer, who, from 2021 to 2023, boasted a stellar 2.25 ERA and established himself as a hometown hero. His impressive performance, punctuated by 39 saves in 2023, made him a fan favorite, especially given his Pittsburgh roots.

However, Bednar's recent struggles have been pronounced. His 2024 ERA climbed to 5.77, accompanied by a decrease in strikeouts and an increase in walks, leading to the loss of his closer role. His first three appearances in 2025 further compounded his woes, featuring blown saves and game-losing performances. These setbacks have forced the Pirates to reassess his role, opting to send him to the minors to regain his form. In contrast, Jason Delay's designation clears a roster spot as the team focuses on developing their pitching talent.
