Following the trade of Jesús Luzardo, Marlins' president of baseball operations Peter Bendix has indicated that the team remains open to various trade possibilities, including a potential deal involving the 2022 NL Cy Young winner, Sandy Alcantara. Speaking to the Miami Herald, Bendix said, "You said it: We never rule out anything. We listen to everything. Sandy is a really important piece for our organization. I'm really excited to see him pitch on Opening Day."
Despite not pitching in 2024 due to recovering from Tommy John surgery, Alcantara, who is 29, remains a highly sought-after talent. His injury doesn't diminish his value, as his performance prior to the surgery had established him as an ace pitcher. Contending teams are likely to pursue Alcantara, recognizing the opportunity to acquire a top-tier pitcher who has a proven track record. One of the key factors making Alcantara an attractive trade target is his affordable contract. He is owed $17 million, for both 2025 and 2026, with a $21 million club option for 2027. This contract is considered a bargain for a pitcher of his caliber, making it a matter of when, rather than if, Bendix will trade Alcantara.
