The San Diego Padres have brought back a familiar face, as right-hander Jose Espada signed a minor league deal with the club, reuniting the 27-year-old pitcher with San Diego after his stint with the Padres during the 2022-23 seasons.
Espada spent the last season with Japan's Yakult Swallows hoping for a productive showcase. However, his time in Japan was challenging, with a 5.00 ERA over 27 relief innings. In contrast to his impressive 26.59% strikeout rate during his minor league career in the U.S., Espada's strikeout rate dropped significantly to **13.56%** with the Swallows. While his performance improved within the Swallows' minor league team, his overall experience showcased the obstacles he faced in adapting to the league. Having previously exhibited a strong track record in the minors, including a 2.79 ERA in 19 1/3 innings with the Padres' Triple-A affiliate in 2023, Espada returns to San Diego with hopes of regaining his form and making a significant impact. The Padres are optimistic that his past success in their minor league system will carry over and contribute to the team’s depth in pitching resources.
