The Colorado Rockies have signed right-hander Diego Castillo to a minor league contract, as reported by Aram Leighton of Just Baseball Media. This deal includes an invitation for Castillo, who turns 31 next month, to attend the Rockies' big league spring camp.
Castillo is known for his impressive five-year tenure from 2018 to 2022 as a reliable pitcher in the bullpens of the Rays and Mariners. He posted a 3.12 ERA, 28.1% strikeout rate, 50.7% ground ball rate, and an 8.9% walk rate over 259 2/3 innings and 250 appearances during that period. Unfortunately, the start of the 2023 season saw him struggle, leading the Mariners to remove him from their 40-man roster after just eight games and 8 2/3 innings. Following his time with the Mariners, Castillo spent the rest of 2023 at Triple-A and opted for free agency at the season's end. After signing a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers last winter, he was released before spring training concluded, leading to a quick signing with the Twins1. Castillo's stint with the Twins saw him twice designated for assignment before re-signing with their minor league team following another period of free agency. His 2024 season included 10 MLB games, during which he posted a 2.70 ERA in 10 innings. Control issues have been a significant factor in Castillo's challenges, with his walk rate spiking to 14.92% over 84 1/3 innings of Triple-A ball in the last two seasons and 17.9% in his limited MLB outings. Despite these struggles, Castillo's experience and ability to keep the ball on the ground could prove valuable for the Rockies, particularly in the high-altitude environment of Coors Field1. The Rockies hope that Castillo can regain his form and solidify a spot on their active roster.
