Mariners Add Díaz for Bullpen Relief, Option Hancock
The Seattle Mariners have called up left-handed pitcher Jhonathan Díaz, adding him to their active roster. This move was made possible by an existing open spot on their 40-man roster. To make room on the active roster, right-hander Emerson Hancock was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma. Díaz's promotion comes in response to the Mariners' recent pitching challenges, particularly following Hancock's difficult start against the Tigers. Hancock's short outing, lasting only two outs and allowing six earned runs, heavily taxed the Mariners' bullpen, leading to the need for a multi-inning reliever.
Díaz, who spent most of last season in Triple-A Tacoma's rotation, provides the Mariners with a versatile bullpen option. In 2024, he posted a 4.36 ERA over 117 2/3 innings in Triple-A, showcasing a decent strikeout rate and a high ground ball percentage. His prior major league experience with the Mariners, combined with his remaining options, allows the team to utilize him flexibly throughout the season. With Kirby on the injured list and Hancock optioned, the Mariners are exploring their rotation options, potentially using Díaz and other optionable arms for spot starts and bulk relief appearances during a stretch of the schedule with multiple off-days.
